Terrible. Absolutely dreadful. They have well over 175 choices of food, which in the restaurant business is a BIG red flag. The services was poor. My drink was refilled only once, during an hour and a half meeting. My salad was a handful if rotten iceberg lettuce. My fish and chips were soggy. My waitress was obnoxious and seemed like she hated her job. Overall, I would not recommend this place to anyone.

(3.5 stars) Had the grilled chicken gyro plate with the chicken lemon rice soup and the flavored tea. Ordered up chocolate milk and a plate of fries for the kid. The soup was more of what I call a 'gut filler' (not bad, but not excellent either). It came with a large bread/cracker basket that is a clepto-Grandma's dream. The actual contents of that were meh (bread in the plastic wrap was pretty bland). I really enjoyed the chicken gyro for sure. Service from Kerri was friendly and spot on. Menu is pretty large so I would say stick to the more popular diner/Greek fare. Ordering Mexican in a place that isn't a Mexican restaurant is probably not going to end well. Decoration/environment was nice. Bonus for the extra large booths. Bill was ~$15 before tip.

This place is always packed and I finally got a chance to try it last night. The food was okay, even though I had to send my sirloin back for not being cooked well (it was very red... Closer to medium rare instead of well done). When it came back out it was very rubbery, probably from being microwaved. Service was lacking as well. Had to ask for silverware and refills, whenever the server decided to show up. Won't be going back here.

I went in here for an early breakfast. Service slow and food was not good. I won't be returning.

We've visited about 3 times. It's just okay. Pork tenderloin Medallions are NOT made of tenderloin. It's a flattened pork chop, breaded with some very salty crumbs, and cooked until way overdone. They were bad. I sent them back, and asked for just grilled pork tenderloin. This time, I got the same meat w/o any breading or any seasoning, overcooked on the grill. I couldn't even cut them with my knife, let alone chew them! The next visit, I had a Royal Philly Burger. It was pretty decent. And yesterday, I had a tuna melt on an onion roll, the operative word being 'MELT'. It was a cold tuna salad sandwich on a cold onion roll with a cold slice of swiss. Also a FAIL. Why didn't I send it back, you ask? I was with a party of 5, and if I had sent it back, it would mean it took me that much longer to eat my meal (I'm the slowest eater in the group). I've got it - how about MAKING IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME?!?!? Seriously, a Tuna Melt on an onion roll? Maybe the cook needs to be trained on how to grill a sandwich...and while you're at it, take the word 'tenderloin' off the menu.

Great "go-to-when-you-can't-think-of-anywhere" restaurant. A lot of grey hair, so that tells you it's reasonably priced, and a lot of...ummmm..."plus-sized" people, so you know the portions are large. The fish & chips are great...wifey and I get them almost every trip. My monster-in-law swears by the turkey rueben, and my man-child son loves the chicken gyro/wrap. Lots of fries (nothing special, Gordon Foods-type) but hot and salty they are good. Soups are always homemade, and the usual coney fare is present on the extensive menu.

Good, traditional diner. Nothing bad, nothing special. Coffee is bad. They need to clean something. I usually order breakfast there. Basic.

Very busy, but great food. Many many different options to choose from. They have something for everyone. Good stuff.

Alright, alright, so it might not be 5-star worthy, but we loved this place. We moved to Clarkston in November of 2011 and this was one of the first restaurants we went to. The service was great, they were open 24/7, and the staff is just overall AWESOME. Because we weren't from the area and didn't have family around, we ended up going here for Thanksgiving in 2011 AND 2012. For ME, it also has some nostalgia associated with it. So much so that I will PROBABLY start bawling when I write this review: We moved to Puyallup WA in January of this year and before we left, my mom, my aunt, my cousins, and my one and only nephew (whom I love and adore) came to see us. We took them for dinner here. We knew that we wouldn't be able to see them for a couple of years (until we got vacation time) and this was the last time I saw my nephew and my mom. Of course, I cried, when saying goodbye - The staff didn't roll their eyes at me, they didn't bother me as I hugged my nephew and my mom, and they just let us be. We'll definitely be stopping here again when we're in the area.

Food is really yummy. Tomato bisque soup, chicken fingers, all of the salads, and the sandwiches. The service is not good though especially after hours. The waitress was on her cell sitting at an empty booth while we were waiting for her to take our order. Then never checked on us for the entire meal. 2 other waitresses had to come refil our drinks. This place could be awesome but the service is what makes it on the ho hum side.

I have always had a great experience here. The wait staff rocks, the management is always present and if there is an issue they will bend over backwards to fix it. Thanks for your hard work and openness to suggestions.

I've been to this place many times and 2 things never change. 1. Great food 2. The awful service. It doesn't matter if there are 5 customers or 100 in the diner. The service just plainly sucks. I under stand my refill isn't that important but neither is your dancing with random customers, smoke break or just chilling in a empty booth conversing with the other wait staff.

    (3)
  • Peter L.

This is the type of place where you're always going to be satisfied with the food, but never blown away. For the prices it is very reasonable. There are issues with the service: if you ask for a minute to decide on your order you will get 10, you may find yourself asking for something more than once. Best advice I can give is don't wait for the waitress to come to you - eye contact bordering on stalking is necessary if you need immediate attention. Its a diner. You will get a diner experience. You're not likely to leave the place unsatisfied nor are you likely to leave feeling like you have discovered the mecca of Clarkston cuisine.

I hadn't planned to go out for a meal, but I got a headache while I was out driving and needed to stop somewhere. I saw the Royal Diner with its crowded parking lot, so I figured it must be pretty good to have that many customers on a Sunday at 1pm. I wasn't terribly hungry, but I wanted something healthy. I decided on the chef salad, figuring it would be the ubiquitous lettuce, with a few other veggies and shiny lunch meat. However, I was quite surprised & pleased to receive a decent sized salad with large chunks of cucumber, several grape tomatoes and REAL turkey breast -- not the deli stuff. It really hit the spot. The accompanying pita bread left something to be desired, however; while it was warm, it was very doughy and tasteless, so I didn't eat that.

Took my daughters to the RD for dinner tonight, they had asked to go to a coney, I should have found one. They both ordered breakfast for dinner, pancakes with chocolate chips. They were under cooked and overloaded with chips. For a 7 and 9 year old to not finish a pancake because it had too many chips in it says everything. I ordered the Royal Reuben. This 1 lb monstrosity was disgusting to say the least. The bread on the bottom was soggy and scorching hot. The corned beef was less than tender and overall a waste. Fries, unsalted and unseasoned, just a disappointment all around. We will not be going back. How they've made it 4 years in business is beyond me. On a side note, our server Renee was awesome, attentive and very good at her job.

I've been here a few times before and everything was decent. However, my last experience at this diner was terrible. The food was alright, but the waitress was extremely disrespectful. I had the privilege of being served by the black haired waitress who had the appearance of someone who was just released after a 12 year prison sentence. That by itself is not bad, but when combined with the cold glares and belligerent attitude I received from the ex-con waitress, I got the impression that my money is not wanted here. The 30-second substandard service that I receive at McDonalds is better than this place.

We have been going to Royal Dinner for about 4 years. They used to have great food, we would go there two or three times a week, they had good quality steaks at a reasonable price, and at that time I would've gave them a five star rating. But in this last year or so, their quality of food has gone WAY DOWN, and the prices are going up. I wish they would start buying better Quality meats.

Jack of all trades, master of nothing. Menu is huge so it's hit it miss here. Portions are huge...it's open 24 hours so it's good enough after the bar.

This was my first visit, passed it a thousand times. Stopped for breakfast. Aesthetics are very nice. Staff were very courteous and attentive. Water glass served as soon as I was seated. Menu is huge. Coffee served with Thermidor, no waiting for waitress to refill. I ordered eggs Benedict with side option for hash browns or pancakes, had the HB. Food was excellent, Hash browns very good and nice size serving. service time very good. Definitely will return. Total bill with coffee and tax, $10.47

Nice little diner. They forgot to give us some bread, but they gave us some when we asked for some. The Mushroom Swiss burger is pretty good. It was busy when we came in, but the service was alright. I would probably go there again.

This is a great place to eat clean and staff is friendly and attentive. I ordered the full order of fish and a baked potato it was the best fish I've had in a long time. My friend ordered the new York strip steak well done and it came cooked perfect and it was so juicy the cabbage soup was very good and my friend had the chicken pot pie soup it was delicious . and we got carrot cake to go so if your looking for a inexpensive dinner that's good I highly recommend coming here to eat!

We've been going to The Royal Diner for years. For the last few months, we've been having problems with the quality of the food and the ticket times. Last night was our last night there after being insulted by the manager. Having arrived to a less than half-filled diner last night, our wait was approximately 35 minutes. When our meal, or parts of our meal, started to arrive, it was again messed up. Let me see... my wife ordered eggs over medium, well done hashbrowns with cheese and onions and toast. I ordered steak (med) and eggs over medium with HB and toast and my sister ordered a cheese burger. 35 minutes after our appetizer, 4 cups of coffee and 4 cups of tea for my wife, we inquired about our order. They started bringing it out... a little at a time. My wifes eggs arrived first... and undercooked hash browns on another plate. As she sent the hashbrowns back, my steak arrived... just the steak... well. Well done, that is. As I sent THAT back, my wife still only has eggs in front of her.. no toast, no hash..and my sister was just then getting her burger. The manager was walking by and my wife mentioned to him about how poorly the cooks were performing (again) tonight. He then points out that we quite frequently send our food back and how it only seems to be us having the problem. With that, we stood up, told him to stop the food and we were leaving. As I was paying for the coffee and tea and saganaki appetizer that we had, he informed me he personally cut into my steak and checked it... however when "I" cut into it, was brown and dry. I am not a picky eater and can take a steak anywhere between rare and medium well....and I couldn't take what they were trying to serve me. When my sister and wife walked out and I was there to pay the bill, he insisted to me that he has the best cooks in Oakland county...and as my voice rose, I was aware that everyone in the place had quieted down and was listening to me as I proceeded to inform the manager this: "You do NOT have the best cooks in Oakland county. You don't even have "good" cooks because you have two people back there that can't even put an order out where all the food arrives at the same time let alone prepared the way someone requested it..;and there is NO reason even just ONE cook can't put out an order on time and in its entirety with only a half filled diner" If you choose to eat at Royal Diner, please be sure Tony is cooking... he is the ONLY reason we kept coming back. I wish Tony was there last night. (sigh) Bye Bye Royal Diner. We will no longer be entertaining our 4 to 6 guests, twice a week, there. You don't need my 100 to 150 dollars a week because you are obviously saving money with those new "cooks".

Food is ok nothing to hoot about basic diner food. The omelet was gross seemed fried and not much egg to it. The filling was not really there either. I had to greek omelet and it was meh. The hash browns were good but thats about it. Nothing to crazy good or bad just not a stand out place.

Quite a bit of food for a very low price! I had the two eggs, sunny-side up, with hash browns and toast. About $6 which you'd get at Denny's for $8+. Great service for a diner!

I used to like this place, their grilled chicken salad was one of my favorites but after the last couple of visits they have lost my business. I started getting take outs on weekday evenings as I could just swing by on my way home from work, very convenient. But I found the service got progressively worse and the clincher was the cashier had the nerve to ask me if I want to leave a tip on a take out order. A tip? For what? For forgetting to put the bread and dressing in my last order (which I never complained about) or for the lack of friendliness or even a thank you when I pick up my order. I would tip the cook if I could but not those cashiers. The last time I was picking up an order 2 gals behind the cash register barely looked at me, did not smile or even say thank you they just asked for the name on the order..gave me my total and handed me my order. Maybe it was busy that night but that is no excuse. Anyway I wont go back, I can get the same salad at Leos Coney Island. Train your cashiers on customer service!

Dearest Royal Diner, why were you not on Yelp before my recent visit? I love you and wanted to "check in" and rave about your amazing milkshakes, extensive menu and great prices and service? All I can say is surprisingly yum! It's a step up from your average diner, the decor is too! It has a cute little fireplace in the middle and if it wasn't boiling out, I would have loved to see it lit. We had a lot of trouble deciding what to eat and I ended up settling on the chicken strip pita sandwich and the onion rings. I have a crazy stomach and had to substitute the kind of cheese and have them not put on the tomatoes. They switched the cheese no problem, but forgot that I asked for no tomatoes. The second the waitress set the plate down in front of me she noticed it and apologized a lot and started to whisk it away from me. I assured her it was no problem, I had fingers and could take them off :) The onion rings were to die for, my friend enjoyed his pastrami sandwich (said "mmm" a billion times) and his sweet potato fries. So this is one of my new favorite places in the area and if I'm not hungry, I can always make room for their milkshakes! P.S. They are open 24 hours!

Great quality diner food - extensive menu (late night they have a smaller menu, don't let that fool you!). Always clean, friendly staff, prompt service. Desserts change out frequently. Soups have daily specials - Monday's cheeseburger is a must try at least once. Very tasty, and unique. Cabbage soup is a great daily staple - chunks of carrots, cabbage, tomatoes and spices. Servings are easily big enough to split. I've tried: Burger Chicken Kebob Gyro Chicken ciabatta sandwich Breakfast plate (eggs, hash browns, bacon) along with several others and always been happy with my order.

I have been to this place before with little to no problems, but the last visit told me to never come back. We went in for dinner, and got seated right away. The hostess took our drink orders, and then the waitress came up, never introduced herself, and took our orders in a very hurried state. I had ordered a hamburger, plain. When the food was brought to us by a different server who promptly put the food down and left., the hamburger had all the toppings on it, which I almost expected because there are different versions of "plain" for people. When our waitress came by I asked her to take it back and make the correction. The hamburger was then brought out to me, too quickly, by the other server. I checked it and it was the previous burger with the toppings scraped off and flipped UPSIDE DOWN, to hide the fact. I got this other servers attention, flipped the patty over and told her that wasn't acceptable. She said, "Ok." took it and brought a burger back again, very quickly. I checked, and it was the EXACT SAME HAMBURGER. I sent it back and refused to order anything else. Our original waitress apologized, I have no idea who the manager was because I never saw them. My complaint isn't about getting the order wrong, I know I'm picky, my complaint is that this is how the kitchen staff treated a re-fire. Just scrape the stuff off, flip it upside down, they'll never know. If they are doing that to a simple hamburger, what else are they doing back there? Careless, lazy, uncaring. DO NOT TRUST THE KITCHEN HERE. Don't go here. There are way too many other, better places to go in the area.

Extensive menu, large selection of breakfast, lunch, dinner, and dessert items. Very reasonably priced, service excellent and fast, really inexpensive prices for the value received. I wish we lived around here (we are from CT), we would be frequent fliers at this nice clean little restaurant, really more than a "diner". My husband had a huge portion of veal Parmesan with pasta, garlic bread, and a large cup of soup. I had a huge Greek salad with grilled chicken, lots of chicken. The tab was $23, how can you beat that?!?!

The food here is definitely better than the standard diner. Their menu is incredibly expansive, from breakfast, to lunch sandwiches, to full-on dinner combos. I liked the many different side options to go with the sandwiches. The portions are generous, the food is fresh, and the service is friendly.

I thought this place may be a cute diner with good food and service. I was very wrong. The waitress didn't even introduce herself and was in a hurry and very stern. Then she proceeded to completely get my order wrong, and act upset when I told her I didn't order what she brought me. It took 20 minutes at least to get the re-make and by this time I was ready to leave. Finally when it arrived it was still wrong. I basically tolerated it because of how long it took to get it right, and left disappointed. I will never go back here.

Great place! Nice ambiance. Very clean. We recently moved to the area and had seen the fun facade while driving by and finally had a chance to check it out. My wife and I took our three kids there (7, 4 & 2) on a Tuesday night and it was busy, but not crowded. My kids were hungry and I ordered them a waffle (delicious!) and spaghetti (great, very meaty, sauce) right after we sat down and it was out very quickly. The waitress, Vanessa, was also very attentive and brought out a fun, diverse cracker bowl that the kids got a kick from picking out what they were going to eat (including giant slices of bread in baggies which they loved). My wife ordered pork chops and received a very generous amount of them. I had the greek omelet. If you like the ingredients you will love this omelet! We splurged and had desert. My wife ordered cherry pie and when we asked we were told the cherry pies are not made on site, but it was delicious: it is hard to find good pie in restaurants, and Royal Diner has it! All in all it was a great deal of a meal. Five of us ate, including deserts for under $45 which we considered a very fair price considering the quality (and quantity!) of food. I would definitely recommend Royal Diner. Though I think lots of others have too...I drove by on a weekend night once and the lot was packed!

Sssoo good that I've been a dozen times. Appetizers such as the potato skins are great. Breakfast selection is huge with large portions and tasty. I do love the chicken quesadilla soup. Meals like the burgers, shrimp, london broil, steak, stir frys, and any salad combination is great. I love the milkshakes as a dessert. I especially like their coffee here as well. I'm sure I'm missing something but give it a try.

Bumping up to three stars as the salads here are very fresh (much better salads than you'll find at any other restaurant in this price range).

We went for dinner, and found the place pretty busy (5 minute wait). As others have commented, the decor is very pleasant and it is clean and welcoming. Service was very good too, with instant water, drink orders, and offer to take our order. We had never been, so it took some time to go over the extensive menu options. The food is what kept my rating from being higher, but it could just be we chose the wrong things. My daughter's hamburger was ok but nothing special. My wife ordered the corned beef sandwich on an onion roll because she hates rye, but it came on rye, and my fish and chips had thin batter while I prefer thicker. I traded meals with her and we were both satisfied. The fried mushroom appetizer and cream of asparagus soup were both good, so I probably will try again and try something else.

Great decor, staff is always friendly and there's quite a variety on the menu (Late night menu is smaller, but still plenty to choose from) Better coffee than your average restaurant that uses the standard Gordon's or Sysco brands w/ no wait for a refill because they leave a pot on the table for you. All the food I've tried has been good with good sized portions. Which is why there can be a bit of a wait during busy times..PEOPLE LIKE THIS PLACE! To those who complain, if you want 5 star food, go pay $ at a five star restaurant. And I can't laugh enough at the reviewer who suggests Big Boy is so far superior to this place when BB has bland food and bagged lettuce... Must be a BB waitress who has lost a good portion of her business to the Royal! Above average food with above average portions at a fair price! Visit The Royal!

eh. thats all i can say for the food, and for the waitstaff i have never encountered such unskilled (teenagers) because thats all they are. if only they had adults that really needed money and worked hard for it! .. oh well other restaurants on dixie.

Excellent food. I've been here twice - and ordered the Cobb salad both times. Both salads were exactly what they should have been - delectable slices of grilled chicken atop a bed of crisp, fresh, green lettuce, with cheese, egg, bacon, and other assorted vegetables. Their blue cheese dressing is excellent and probably homemade, consisting of big chunks of pungent, salty cheese in a heavy cream. Delicious - and a welcome change from those other places that think 'blue cheese dressing' is just ranch with some flavoring added. Open 24 hours, with stylish decor, reasonable prices, and good service. I can't think of any reasons not to like this place.

I have been there a couple times and got the garden crepes. It is two crepes with scrambled eggs, mozz. cheese, asparagus, tomatoes and mushrooms with a savory sauce on top. Much like the sauce on top of an eggs benedict. It is filling and fresh tasting. Price is around $8.50. I have seen their salads and they look really fresh. The place is always busy and they have a huge selection. They made the food very quickly and the servers are excellent.

Had to put my review here because I was shocked to see Royal Diner only getting 2 1/2 stars. I don't remember what this place used to be - it was a million different diners. Someone else bought it and remodeled the heck out of it inside and out, and visually, as diner's go, it's very appealing. I've been there twice, once for breakfast and once for lunch. We tried a variety of food and it was all good. I absolutely loved the fresh spinach and feta omelette I had. Fresh tasting and lots of feta. So much food on my plate it was hard to finish. Everyone I talk to about this place loves it. If you go, go during an off-time or be prepared to wait, because it is PACKED - all the time. It took my parents several tries before they were able to get in. I had no trouble with the staff. All were friendly and helpful. I'll definitely go back. The menu is large and has a wide variety for everyone. It's clean, people are friendly, and the food is good. What more do you want?
